Having a healthy relationship with yourself is one of the keys to having great relationships with others because your relationships with others are simply reflections of your own inner self relationship. Anything you have loved in yourself you can embrace in the world, alternatively anything you dislike or despise in yourself you will also view the same in the world and in others.

You can creating a loving relationship with yourself by fulfilling your own needs and values and working through any emotional and mental baggage you will inevitably have picked up along the journey of life. Life is full of challenges and you will constantly pick up baggage along the way, so it is important to have a regular means of fulfilling you own needs and clearing away stuff you have been hanging on to. For those of you who have flown commercially you will have heard the flight attendants give safety instructions regarding the oxygen masks. You must put your own mask on first before you can help others with theirs. This same concept applies to your relationships. You must first have a healthy relationship with yourself before you can have a truly healthy relationship with others.

Having good communication with yourself and understanding that your emotions are simply a way for your body to let you know to pay attention to something is a great start. Knowing and respecting your own values and maintaining a healthy opinion of yourself will allow you to then reflect that onto other relationships in your life.
